The Scottish Knights Templar also comprise knights who took refuge in Scotland from France.  The order was originally founded in 1118 A.D by eight knights and are probably best known for their military role in the Holy Land during the Crusades.

What distinguishes the Scottish Knights Templar cross from that of its English counterpart is the design of the red cross itself which based more on the Maltese Cross design. It is also sometimes depicted with eight points.

It is to a large degree the Malta and the Knights of St John influence which really comes to bear in the Scottish depiction.

The first decision you need make is: Would I prefer a fixed head or reversible masons ring?

Fixed head rings are usually a little cheaper and can and should be worn with pride at the Lodge and on parades etc. Many masons find this a great way to go.

The other option is to choose a reversible or “swivel” head where the entire top revolves to reveal a plain gold area which can either be engraved or simply left “as is”. Many freemasons prefer this more discrete route and the “secret” nature of the swivel seems to appeal. Of course, changing from plain to masonic head takes literally only a second. These two men had King Baldwin I of Jerusalem allow them to congregate in the Royal Palace and their Emblem ultimately came to be a Red Cross on a white background – based on the English flag.

This is why these particular masonic rings are often referred to as English Knights Templar rings.

King Richard (the Lionheart) of England learned the Crusaders had lost Jerusalem to the Saracen leader Saladin and decided to take up the cross of the crusades, hence the connection between the English flag and the Knights.
